A lot of things are connected to your phone number-- Aadhaar, bank account, income tax, all chatting apps, your car registration and basically your entire life. The year 2020 has highlighted a change in the mindsets of scammers in India. They are now opting for personalised scams, focusing on identity thefts and socially engineering their baits to skim money. And throwing away your phone number to every random person is definitely not a clever thing to do. Here are chatting apps that let you chat without revealing your phone number. Note that some apps may require you to sign in with your phone number, but you will be able to hide them while chatting with strangers.

Wire Secure Messaging: No phone number needed at all

Wire Secure Messaging provides the right platform to talk to someone secretly without revealing your phone number. Go to your desktop, open "https://app.wire.com/", register using an email ID that is not your primary ID, create a unique profile ID and you are all set. Download the app on your phone and sign-in with the registered email address. Wire is like Twitter, you can add and chat people with their profile IDs. No phone numbers required at all.

Telegram allows users to chat privately without sharing your phone number. You can set up your profile ID and hide your phone number in the Settings to chat privately without revealing your phone number and profile picture. Having said that you would need a phone number for the initial setup.
